How long has it been, dear readers?
Or maybe this is the first time, in which case, disregard the above...
It's me, Rebecca Jones-Howe. I write salacious fiction. As of late, I've been writing a lot of gothic fiction. As of these past few weeks, I've mostly just been watching curling games and writing down suggestive curling quotes.
Back at the end of February, I wondered how much my extensive curling binge through two national championships and the Olympics would affect my writing. I can’t lie. I haven’t written much, but I have been writing. Not to mention, I’ve been wanting to write a trilogy of curling-themed novellas and all this curling has helped immensely, so more on that if I can actually like…start writing it? Maybe in March, I dunno.
New Fiction…
This week, I just dropped a new story (or rather, an old story rewritten with new gothic styling) called "Hostages". It's a modern gothic novelette about a woman on vacation in a tourist ski village who crosses paths with a stranger she was once held hostage with during a botched liquor store robbery. She saw him get shot in the chest and how he's there, alive and compelling. Sexy things happen. Sad things happen. If you'd like to read "Hostages", it appears in Eros & Thanatos: An Anthology of Death and Desire from Quill & Crow Publishing House.
In other news, I’m slowly plugging away at the final short story for what will be my second collection of short fiction. I haven’t published anything since my ill-fated debut collection, VILE MEN, back in 2015. This past year I’ve had numerous people interested in reading it, yet unable to find a copy. It’s been out of print since Curbside Splendor went defunct, but you can sometimes score copies on Thriftbooks or eBay, if you look hard enough.
If you really wanna read it and can’t find a copy, feel free to hit me up and we can probably work something out. At the end of the day, I am always thrilled AF when people express interest in reading my old work.
My new collection will be a different blend. It’s still the same stuff that I used to write, just a bit more goth. There’s more third person and more past tense but still pretty much along the same vein of what I usually write. Think horrible men and gritty sex and awful endings with some feminist twists.
I’m gonna keep ploughing toward completing this thing, but I’ve hit a few bleak winter hurdles and am surprisingly finding a way out by watching curling, which I recently posted about on my blog (that you should totally read, right?).
In other writing…
I recently penned a new “Grown-Ass V.C. Andrews” Review for Whitefern, the totally unwanted sequel to My Sweet Audrina.
What I’m reading…
I just finished My Dark Vanessa, which was wonderful and a very enjoyable read. It’s been a while since I loved a book this much, and I just loved Kate Elizabeth Russell’s voice.
I also just started Girl Like a Bomb by Autumn Christian. It’s a FUN read so far, though I’ve stalled a bit with all the curling binging.
Also, V.C. Andrews’ official biography just came out. I just got it in the mail, so I’ll be reading that after the Olympics is over.
What I’m listening to…
Mainly this playlist I made for my current WIP, which is full of gritty garage-style rock and some folksy stuff. The WIP takes place in the Klondike so this blend of tunes has made for some great listening as the snow melts here in Western Canada.
Alas…
That’s it’s for me this time around. I just ate a shit-ton of fondue with my husband while watching Canada take on China in men’s curling, so it was a pretty decent Valentine’s Day.
